          In our society today families are spread out all over the country and the world.  As a result, when a death occurs people are often forced to make sudden and potentially costly travel plans to attend the funeral.  In recognition of this reality, some airlines do offer special pricing for those who can prove that they are travelling for the funeral of a family member.

           Please Note - Due to ongoing changes in the airlines industry, Compassionate Travel policies have also changed.  There also seem to be varying practices from one locale to another with the same airline.  On that basis, when booking your flight, please ensure that they know it is for a funeral and ask what their policy/practice is.  Do not automatically assume that you will receive a discount.

Air Canada :   75% of the normal full-fare price.  Now covers extended family not just immediate family.  Check with the airline for specific details, at 1-800-361-5373 or www.aircanada.ca.

West-Jet:  No discount but will provide tickets at the lowest normally available price, and no additional fee for changing flight times or return flights (nromally an additional cost).  Covers extended family.  Call 1-800-538-5696 or www.westjet.com for more details.

Procedures:  Unfortunately there is no consistency in the policies and procedures at the various ticket outlets and airports.  Some will provide the discount on the spot; some require paperwork after the fact; some require "death certificates" faxed to them immediately; some will simply call the funeral home for verbal proof.  Ultimately the family should be prepared for anything.
