There are many death notifications that need to be done, and often various death
benefits which the survivors may be entitled to.
For many years, at
Everest of Thunder Bay, we have automatically notified various departments of
the government, including the Office of the registrar general, Income Securities
(CPP and OAS), GST, Department of Veterans' Affairs, Indian Affairs, etc... as
required. Our policy has been: when in doubt, notify them.
We have also provided
families with the necessary application forms for the Canadan Pension Plan death
and survivors' benefits, long before funeral homes were expected to do so (we
had to fight with the government to provide us with the application
forms). We have also provided families with assistance and guidance in
completing these application forms and others for life insurance, etc...
It has been our
practice, never to intrude on a family's privacy, but to be willing to provide
them with practical help and guidance throughout the days and weeks following
the death. One of the quiet ways we do this, is by providing each of our
client families a book entitled: "What Next? - A Comprehensive
Guide for Beareaved Families - Before, During & After The
Funeral". This booklet was originally written and
published by a funeral director, as an aid for his families. It covers the
time between the death and services (before); the services themselves (during);
and most importantly, the time after the services. it covers everything
from CPP applications to cancelling Ontario Drivers' Licenses and Health Cards,
and transferring ownership of vehicles. Families continually inform us
just how helpful this booklet is.
If you have any questions, or if we can be of
any assistance, please do not hesitate to call us, at 344-1121,
or 473-1121.
